Journal of Biomedical Photonics & Engineering

Online Journal of Biomedical Photonics & Engineering (J-BPE) covers fundamental research and applications focused on the interactions between light and biological materials and biomedical signal processing. The objectives of J-BPE are to establish an effective channel of communication between researchers, practitioners and clinicians, government agencies, universities, academic and research institutions and persons working in the area of biomedical photonics and engineering. Our focus encompasses the application of the basic principles of photonics and engineering to the development of medical devices and technologies, advancements in the early detection, diagnostics, and therapy of disease and with the ultimate aim of producing improvements in the quality of health care.

In our memory forever

November 16, 1965 — November 7, 2021

We regret to inform you that on November 7, 2021 due to a sudden stroke of heart attack, our friend and member of our Editorial Board, Prof. Bashkatov, Alexey Nikolaevich, passed away. This disease pulled Alexey out of our community at the most creative peak of his life, full of strength and ideas.

Prof. Bashkatov was born on November 16, 1965 and graduated from the Department of Optics of Saratov State University in 1993, where he worked following thirty years in diligent teaching and solid research. Since 1991, he worked as an engineer first, then as a leading engineer, and, since 2002, after successfully defending a thesis, as an associate professor.

Alexey Bashkatov is a co-author of 17 book chapters, 11 patents, and more than 350 scientific and conference papers, full texts reports in the field of biophotonics. His investigations dedicated to diverse scientific fields including theoretical and experimental research in the optics of biological tissues, biological and medical physics, biophotonics, biomedical optics, and control of optical parameters of biological tissues, etc.

He was renowned globally for his great scientific achievements. Prof. Bashkatov contributed as a Special Editor of several J-BPE issues and as a co-Editor of Special Sections related to Tissue Optics and Spectroscopy. In particular, Prof. Bashkatov is a co-author of one of the most cited papers in J-BPE (Ref: Optical clearing of biological tissues: prospects of application in medical diagnostics and phototherapy)

The Editorial Board of J-BPE express deep condolences to the family and friends of Prof. Bashkatov.
